Excursion (2023), Performance-and-Film Lecture, digital film stillĀ
Excursion is a cluster of artworks which share my slow, exploratory practice with participants and includes a Guided Tour, a sound composition and a Performance-and-Film Lecture. The live-performed lecture is transcribed from the score of the guided, participatory walk and is filtered through readings, writing, and the artworks. The sonic composition, an incantation for the rocks, focuses on the ritual incantation held during the Excursion walk, and recordings of voice and resonance in the Hollicombe Beach Access Foot Tunnel.
I invited a group of women participants to join with the ecologies of Hollicombe (a small, coastal area in Devon, SW UK) where we would walk-with the violences of disappearing coastal features, legacies of toxicity and shared human and more-than-human vulnerabilities. Our Tour, involving conjuring, mimesis and incantation, followed my invitation to visit phantom marine caves in this local intertidal zone. We would become vibrant with molecular pollutants and particulates, while walking in the company of carbon molecules, and navigating industrial pasts and the chaos of the present climate.
